The Backbone of Pennsylvania: Agriculture and Community Banks
Agriculture is more than just an industry—it is the foundation of Pennsylvania’s economy, culture, and way of life. As the #1 industry in the state, agriculture plays a crucial role in sustaining communities, providing jobs, and ensuring food security. Southeastern Pennsylvania alone generates 82% of the state's agricultural sales, largely because 55% of Pennsylvania’s farms are located in this region. One of the key counties leading the charge in farmland preservation is Berks County, which ranks #2 in the nation for farmland protection. With 831 farms covering 79,314 acres permanently preserved, Berks County ensures that these lands remain dedicated to agricultural production and commercial equine activity, safeguarding farming for future generations.
While farmers work tirelessly to produce food and sustain rural economies, community banks stand as vital partners in their success. Nationally, community banks are responsible for 80% of all agricultural lending, demonstrating their commitment to the industry. At Fleetwood Bank, we understand the challenges farmers face—from unpredictable weather to fluctuating market prices—and provide tailored financial solutions such as operating loans, equipment financing, and lines of credit to help them thrive.
"As both a commercial lender and a long-time supporter of Pennsylvania agriculture, I’ve seen firsthand how crucial community banks are in sustaining and growing our farming communities. Through financial support and community engagement, we ensure that agriculture remains strong for future generations."
Beyond financing, community banks actively invest in the agricultural community by supporting educational programs, community development projects, 4-H livestock sales, and local fairs and festivals. These efforts strengthen local economies and provide valuable resources to farmers and their families.
Pennsylvania State Fairs: Celebrating Agriculture & Economic Growth
State fairs are more than just fun-filled events; they serve as a vital showcase of Pennsylvania’s rich agricultural heritage. With 107 PA State Fairs—including three in Berks County—these fairs educate families about farming, support local businesses, and create lasting traditions.
At the 2024 Pennsylvania State Fair Convention in Hershey, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding highlighted the economic impact of PA state fairs, revealing that:
$673 million was spent by visitors in rural communities where fairs are held.
These events supported over 10,700 full-time jobs and generated $21.3 million in tax revenue.
Overall, PA state fairs contribute $1.14 billion annually to the state's economy.
More than 4 million visitors attended PA state fairs last year alone.
These fairs rely on the dedication of both paid staff and volunteers, whose passion and commitment keep these events running successfully year after year.
